It really is true that music soothes the savage beast…particularly when that beast is a bored toddler or preschooler. I can't count the times that I have headed off (or interrupted, for that matter!) a temper tantrum by blasting some music and inspiring an impromptu dance party around my living room.
I am always happy to add some new tunes to my playlist so that I don't have to listen to the same old stuff over and over again…particularly when the new tunes are from some tried and true favorites.
Joanie Leeds, a singer, preschool music teacher and virtuoso, performed at my son's birthday party after I found her on google a couple of years ago and her City Kid cd has been in rotation ever since. I can't tell you how I was to hear that she was coming out with a new cd!
I schlepped my kidlets across town to her cd release concert at the JCC Manhattan…where they got to dance with a huge blow up whale, have pictures taken by Dirty Sugar Photography and hear old and new songs performed by Joanie and her band. Awesome.
Someone even won a ukelele, but it wasn't me. Sniff.
Now that I've heard new boogie-friendly songs like the Tofurky Song and Happy as a Clam I am impatiently awaiting the cd that I preordered a couple of months ago. When you see Joanie in concert, she looks like she's having so much fun that it's hard to decide if you want to be her or just be her best friend…and it seemed that most of the kids felt the same.
I can't imagine that I'll be disappointed….
